Well, it's obvious that everyone on this site is amazingly talented, intelligent and well read! ;D So I thought it would be a good idea to talk about/recommend books we've read etc. Like, our very own book club

This is a great idea!
We should make it into an actual book club - so someone would find a random book, and then we'd all read it. Then after a week or two weeks or something (I don't know how busy everyone is) we could all report back for a discussion! We could draw up a list of who was in our club and stuff... It would be very cool!

Definitely! But its a bit sad, I can't seem to find many people who like reading classics most of them are reading stuff that's written at most 20 yrs before...

Err I don't read many classics (though I've read the Lord of the Rings books before. Couldn't read them all in one go though....too much writing) but I like a book called 'The Sight' its written by a guy called David-Clement-Davies.

Classics? Well, I've read 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth' by Jules Verne. I have 'The Lost World' - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, 'The Sword in the Stone' - T.H.White, 'Pride and Prejudice', etc, and I keep meaning to read them but with all my exams and stuffs, I ahevn't had time ^^; They count as classics, oui? Oh yeah, 'Jane Eyre', Shakespeare's plays and 'Frankenstein' count as classics too I guess. And, although they probably don't count as classics, I've read 'The Hobbit', 'Winnie-the-Pooh', The chronicles of Narnia and 'A Hundred and One Dalmations' too...
Yay! A book Club! Although, unless I really like a book (in which case I could probably read it in a day), I dont tend to read very quickly ^^;
Hmm.. recommendations *thinks*, well, lots of things, Eoin Colfer's 'Artemis Fowl' series, Louisse Rennison's 'Confessions of Georgia Nickolson', 'Eragon', Jenny Nimmo's 'Children of the red King' (They're childish books but they're light-hearted, cliched and fun to read *nodnod*) I'd recommend tons more, but that'll do for starters yupyup.

I haven't read many classics, I should though, I really loved Romeo and Juliet when we did it in class. I'm rereading 'His Dark materials trilogy' at the moment, which is very good and their making a film out of it soon- [they better not ruin it ]. Oh, and the Tales of the Otori trilogy by Lian Hearn is fab.

Well, a dragon and a boy. Dragon-riders. Elves, orcs, fantasy etc. *nodnod* Ish very good ^^ What surprised me when I read it was that 'Eragon' is infact the name of a human boy XD Ironic, ne? Eragon and a dragon have to save the world. (I'd say more, but I have a habit of dropping spoilers by accident XD)

Well, it sounds like we all love fantasy here, (which is hardly surprising, this being a fantasy RPG ^^), so why don't we start off reading a fantasy? If anyone has a recommendation, I'd love to hear it, I'm alqways looking for a new read!! Erm, recommendations of mine: 1) Sophie's World by Jopstein Gaarder - the BEST book ever written - it's about a girl called sSophie who finds a letter from a philosopher called Alberto Knox. It's all about different philosophical thoeries throughtout history, and there's a mytery/detective element to it too. DEFINATELY worth reading!! 2) His Dark Material's by Philip Pullman - a really orignial fantasy series about a girl called Lyra and her daemon... READ READ READ!! 3) Pride and Prejudice - Another A-mazing book. And a classic (cien About A girl who's unorthodox views on her role of a woman affect her realtinships with men, with particular refernce to Mr Darcy, most attractive fistional character ever 4) Wuthering Heights by Charlotte Bronte - Cien, if you haven't read this you'll love it! It's a very dark book full of intrigue and romance and ghosts (altough not in a stupid, obvious way). This book is brilliant, a "page0turner" 5) Geogia Nicholson books by Louise Rennison - Hilarious story of Georgia, fro her point of view... so funny i cried in places/fell of my chair/bed/sofa 6) Bridget Jones books by Helen Fielding - like an older version of the Louise Rennison books, maybe even funnier 7) Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson - children's book, technically. But it's a really lovely story, full of adventure and stuff. About a girl who goes to live down the amazon with a strict nanny. very, very good. 8) LOTR books - often wrongly called a trilogy (there are SIX books!!! SIX!!!!!!!!)... well, you;ve all seen the films!! 9) The Tales of the Otari by lian Hearn - (the first book is called Across the Nightingale floor) These are amaaaazing. They're set in a fantasy version of ancient japan, and they're just.. amazing. Those are my favourite books... And Cien, I love reading Classics too!! Hehe, i sound like a book critic ;D

The books about Lyra and her daemon didn't really appeal to me. I mean, I read the first one, and it -was- one of those books I just couldn't put down... but it kinda scared me ^^; I had trouble sleeping for weeks XD My mum is reading them now, she says the second one is betterer *nodnod* Is it?
There are 6 LOTR books? You mean the fellowship of the ring, two towers and return of the king are actually spilt into 6 books or do you mean including the hobit and two others?

Haha, I stand corrected. ;D I LOVE Wuthering Heights! And all of Jane Eyre's books! Yes, there are actually six books of LOTR, not including the Hobbit, the Silmarillion, Unfinished stories...
Hn, Diana Wynne Jones' books are good too, I really like Howl's Moving Castle (both the book and the anime-movie that Miyazaki made), the original Alice in Wonderland (quite an amazing book!), and the Hobbit, the Silmarillion and Unfinished stories (for anyone who read LOTR, since this is mostly background and history and all that)

I <3 <3 <3 His Dark Materials trilogy [rereading at the moment] I love the Harry Potter books, I wouldn't say JK Rowling was the best author in the world- but there's just something about the books that flows. So, yeah, i can't wait for the next one- but I don't want it to come out at the same time, cos then it will all be over... [And i'm going to buy the latest film on DVD, cos I love them too. ((espcially the guy that plays Cedric Diggory...)) ]

I don't read HP, except the first few, it seems after that it got worse so I stopped... The Silmarillion and Unfinished stories are quite difficult to read, because of all the names and stuff (I had to keep referring to the index...) but it's nice all the same I haven't heard of his dark materials before

I think it's the idea that makes Harry Potter good rather than the way they're written... for example.. in the first book it was 'Harry said ___, Hermione said ____ then Ron said ____' .. of course, I was too young to notice then. But I do like them I love to take the mickey out of the movies.. they're just so incredible untrue to the books... I never remember Rowling writing that Harry and the dragon crashed into the roof of Hogwarts and knocking a whole window off. I also don't remember Harry killing the dragon with a conveniently placed bridge XD but there you go. ... And Daniel Radcliff can't act. X3 But it's funny.. Anyway. Back to books. I've read one of the tales of Chrestomanci (by DWJ), 'The lives of Christopher Chant'. And 'Howl's moving Castle' comes in book form?! (I mean as in novel rather than manga) Gah! I want to see the film so much I used to read joke books to get myself to sleep *random*..

The film is incredible! ;D I didn't know there was a book until I read aboout it in the newspaper... I like the Chrestomanci books but a lot of DWJ books are a bit slow at the beginning and then at the end they just sort of... explode.

I never really thought about it before... but I think I prefer classics to new books. They come across as being written more to tell a story than to be a famous author and make lots of money. (the world today is corrupt XP) The problem with classics is, many as there are, they aren't still being written so you're bound to have read them all sooner or later.
I like alot of the books that were made into Disney films; 101 Dalmations etc. I really wanna read the Hunchback of Notre Dame... and Bambi.. Homeward bound looks good too. (and I have The Sword in the Stone trilogy, but I haven't read them yetters ^^; - I blame my schoolwork for that)
