The fire crackled softly, a light cutting through the darkness of the night. The moon was a thin sliver and barely any light came from it. A young, seventeen year old woman sat by the fire, wrapped in a bear-skin blanket to keep herself warm. Arai was lying nearby, his eyes barely opened. He was such an odd creature...always lying down to sleep instead of standing up like most horses did. Karei didn't mind. In fact, she would usually lay against his barrel and fall asleep next to him. She planned to this night, but wasn't feeling very tired yet. Sea-blue eyes watched through ebony locks of hair as the flames dance and flicker rhythmically, the fire reflecting in her deep eyes. A warm glow penetrated her pale skin. Despite her long-sleeved tunic, thick britches, leather boots, and warm flame, she still felt rather cold. A heavy sigh passed through her pale lips and she scooted back some, leaning her slender frame against Arai's broad body. Her head rested against the edge of his neck, where his neck met his shoulder. The beast turned his head slightly, resting his cranium in her lap. She stroked his muzzle gently, sighing heavily again. Kar had run out of money, so couldn't afford an inn or a stable to board Arai. So she just wandered into the forest and finally found this camp site. Thankfully, it was a clear night, not a cloud in the sky. Her head tilted back, her soft gaze scanning the dark night sky. She felt Arai fall asleep and wished she could do the same. Her muscles were soar and she couldn't think straight. She felt too tired to even sleep. A yawn escaped her and she rolled onto her side,s till leaning against Arai slightly. Maybe I should take tomorrow off...just rest for once. She thought. A pleasant smile came upon her lips at the thought. Yea...I'll go to the river we passed and bathe in it, gather all my food and make a meal fit for royalty for both Arai and myself....then just sleep the rest of the day. 'Slong as bandits stay away.... She added mentally, staring down the path she and Arai arrived from. Lids slowly shielded her deep, sea-blue eyes as she attempted to fall asleep, though sleep did not come to her yet.

It had been a long day for an eighteen year old girl named Ava. The girl was small with long thick wavy blonde hair and deep blue eyes. Her skin was fair and her lips were a rose colored red. To most men she was a heart throb. But to her father she was a useless woman with a silly mind. Early that morning her father found a nice long whip to strike her back with. Her back was sore and achy all day long and stung from the drops of sweat slightly grazing the cuts. Later that same morning she told her father she was going to the lake, but to only escape from her life. She wore a thin plad blue dress and left her shoes at the door step, leaving her father to believe she was just dipping her toes. When he wasn’t looking the young woman started to run. Not caring what stone or stick she stepped. She had her eyes on one thing. And that was freedom from her abusive father. After so long, knowing she was safe from his harm she started walking. Feeling great about herself. But it grew dark and the girl had no coat, no food and most of all no protection from anything. She wrapped her arms around herself, trying to keep warm, and searched for the closet city. But her eyes only spotted a warm fire and a blob image of what she saw seemed like a horse. Ava got close but then stopped and sat on the ground a few feet away staring at the fire and all its heat surrounding the unknown person.

''You can come out.'' Karei said aloud, opening her eyes and looking in the direction of the girl. Arai had his head up, ears perched toward the intruder, too. He snorted softly, lying his head back down. Kar glanced sideways at him, then back to where the girl was. obviously not a threat. She thought, stiffling a yawn. ((ooc: sorry crappy >< muse ran away again))

Ava had her eyes partly closed letting a wave of sleep take over her. But then she heard a voice crack through her ears. It was a womans voice saying it was alright for her to come out. So it was safe? The young girl stood up stiffly careful not to break open any scabs that have formed from the whip. She made her way over, this time watching her step. Her feet were just as sore as her back and her eyes were getting drousy. She went to the other side of the fire and stuck out her hands sitting down closely engolfing the heat from the dancing flames. She looked at the horse who was less then pleased to see her there and then the girl. She looked around Ava's age maybe slightly younger. Her deep blue eyes started to change from dark to a light sparkling color. Her eyes were a gift from her dead mother. As well as her fire powers. But those were in wack at the moment. She thought that maybe since she was away from the stress and the beatings she could get ahold of them again. And learn to control them.

''You have blood on your dress.'' Karei stated, blinking in surprise. She sat up some, awaking Arai once more. ''Hush, go back to sleep.'' She said, rubbing his neck and shoulders gently as she movd over to her bags. Kar dug through until she pulled out a few small pouches of herbs.

Ava looked up at her and then back down at her dress. There was nothing on the front of it and nothing on the bottum. It must have been on her back. She noticed the girl digging in her bags and pulling out some urbs. She tapped on her knee slightly getting a bit antsy "What are you doing?" She said in a quick soft voice. She hadn't exactly met anyone that was kind to her. Only a few, since her father mostly kept her cooped up in the small house.

''So you do speak.'' Karei said, sounding amused. She mixed a few of the herbs together, making them into a paste-like substance. ''This will help it heal faster. It'll sting a bit.'' She answered, shifting her position. ''Don't worry, I won't hurt you. Let me see the wound.''

Ava made a small chuckle "Yes I speak." She shifted so her back was facing Karei and she moved her hand to the back of her dress. She slowly on did it being careful not to touch her raw skin. Once she knew she got the backed undone she opened it slightly showing her the whip marks. She gathered her long blonde hair in her hands and brought it to the front of her. Ava sat quietly in an uncomfortable silence, then blurted out her name "Ava. My name is Ava."

Her eyes widened at the sight of the whip marks. ''My gosh...'' She breathed out. Shaking her head she began to gently apply the paste to the whip marks. ''My name is Karei.'' Kar introduced herself, glancing up a moment then paying attention to what she was doing.

Ava stiffened feeling a sharp pain from her back. There was a mixture of stinging and then a mixture of soreness from the actual whip. It was like it never left her her back it was still there hitting her over and over. A small tear welled up in her eyes and she tried to blink them away but blinking only let them roll down her cheeks. She tilted her head to the side and smiled slightly "Thank you...for the help and all."

Karei smiled kindly, finishing up with the herbs and grabbing some bandages. ''No problem.'' She replied, sounding amused, yet a bit distant. It was very rare for her to receive a thank you and she was glad that there were some people in the world who would give one. She bandaged the girl's back carefully, then moved back. ''There. I'm sure I don't have to tell you, but keep pressure off your back for a while.'' Kar smiled partly, regaining her seat by Arai. She wondered who could have done that to the girl, but didn't ask as she was sure it was a sensitive topic.

Ava nodded as she started to button the back of her dress back up. She stared at the fire intently coaxing up an idea. She tapped her foot lightly and then looked up at Karei "You already helped me a lot. By letting me sit by your fire and helping me with my wounds. But, I have a favor to ask." She paused letting her words sink into the other girls ears. "I can't go back to where I lived. Well I can't be seen or stay there anymore. I was wondering if you could help me get supplys from my house without my father seeing me. Maybe you could distract him or something." She looked down at her small roughed feet "I can get food and money to share. Just please. Please help me get some supplys. Food, money, a canteen, and my horse."

Karei blinked at the girl, slightly surprised by the forwardness. She smiled partly and nodded. ''Yes, of course. So...your father did this?'' She assumed quietly, leaning back and poking Arai. ''Hey, wake up.'' She glared as she received a loud groan in response and a flick of the tail. ''Now.'' She poked him between his front legs, starling the hrose awake. He snorted, yawning and slowly sitting up (ish).

Ava stood up. It has to be around the time to leave anyway to get there by morning. She nodded "Yes my father did that to me. We must get there by morning. So he will be up and you can distract him as he was cutting wood for the fire." She started walking in the direction of her home. She was careful not to step on any poor animal or a stick for that matter. She turned around and smiled "Thank you for helping again."

Karei smiled, bridling Arai quickly and pulling him along. ''No problem.'' She grabbed an extra pair of boots, handing them to her. ''Here, where these. I just bought them so you don't have to worry about anything.'' Kar smirked as they continued to walk. She checked to make sure she had her daggers and knives quickly, just in case, but left her sowrs behind.

Ava slipped the boots on and started walking. "Thank you." She lead the way to her home as the sun started to peek out from the sky. They were getting close. It was at least an hour walk and the sun was coming up. She slowed down her pace as she saw an open plain that ended the forest. She turned her head to the right seeing a small lake and then up her father chopping wood for the days fire as he always did. "Ok. Karei, find some way to distract him. Like maybe let your horse loose and start runnng after him. If you have a better idea please do so." She smiled and went further away from her fathers side and ended up staring at the back of the house a few yards away. She turned to Karei waiting for her to go ahead to her father.

''Don't worry. I'll keep him distracted.'' Karei winked, obviously having something in mind. She used to distract people a lot when she was a girl playing with her friends and knew that she still had a talent for it. She mounted Arai and let the reigns loose. ''Ok big guy, have fun.'' She said patting his shoulder. A sharp jab in the ribs with her heel and he bucked before lunging forward swiftly. She kept her ground on him up untilt he came in view and then acted as if she was having problems with the stallion and his bucking.

The old man with grey hair looked up to see a young lady being thrashed around by a horse. He dropped his axe and moved out of the way at first and then opened his arms "Jump off before he kills you!" He moved out of the way again but then came back to her side.
Ava giggled slightly but then snuck up to the back of the house. She then opened the wooden door carefully and stepped inside. A wave of heat pressed against her skin as she entered. Her father liked the house warm, it seemed to remind him of her mother. She walked into the kitchen and found a small wooden container. She opened it and placed a napkin inside as well as a loaf of bread, a few apples and then some meat which she wrapped in its own napkin. There was enough food for at least two weeks if they used it spareingly. But hopefuly they would have reached a city by then. She found a kanteen that she could fill with water at a near by river. She ran quickly to her room and changed from the blue dress to another dress ut this time the color of red. It was all she had, but it will have to do her. She grabbed a leather coat, a leather hat and the few things she had gathered up together. She started for the back door but stopped. She remembered a chest that her mother, when she was seven, told her not to open unless it was needed. This time counted right? She ran to her mothers and fathers room finding a chest that was never opened. She dropped her stuff to the side then whispered a few words and a spark of fire came from her fingers. Hitting the chest making it open. She looked in and grinned at the site of layers apon layers of gold. She just needed half of it to be living like a lady. She found a sack opened it. And stuffed most of the coins inside the sack. She was set except for her mare. She walked out of the house with everything she needed and then turned to the barn. She opened the dor to find a daple grey mare in her stall. Ava set everything to the side and then tacked up her horse, loaded her with her things and then mounted her. She kicked her side making her trot out of the barn and into the woods. She went to where Karei was and whislered for her to come back.

Arai continued to buck around playfully. Kar kept her leg on the horse, but still appeared to have lost control. She acted as if she couldn't hear the man over Arai's hooves and gently directed the stallion in his direction. Arai bucked past him narrowly, whirling around. Just faintly she heard a whistle and forced back a smirk. A light jab in the heel and she pushed Arai forward, once more taking off in the direction she came. Once out of view she regained control, stiffling a laugh. ''Let's hurry in case he follows.'' Arai was apparently thrilled at the sight of a mare and she quickly popped him on the shoulder. ''Knock it off you stud.'' She glowered, rolling her eyes as she lightly pushed him into a floating trot back t the campsite.

The young mare reached her neck out and nipped at the stud playfuly on the neck. Ava pulled her reins in making it harder for Faye to play around with the stallion. Ava nodded to Karei and kicked Faye's side gently making her start a trot following Arai. "I managed to get loads of things. Food and a lot of money if we get to a nearby town."
